DVD Storage Cabinet

We wanted a DVD cabinet that would stand on a separate base. This is what I came up with after a lot of design work.

The primary wood is walnut, with aniline dye and tung oil finish. The door panels, drawer front and handles are spalted maple.

Spalting is caused by mold and fungi in decaying wood. Once the wood is cut and dried, the process stops, and you're left with an incredible display of patterns and colours.

The cabinet and base have an angled profile. The drawer front was made with the same profile. This involved cutting the drawer front in half, creating the angles, then putting the pieces back together. The dark feature in the middle of the drawer is called a "butterfly" joint. It adds both strength and decoration. Handles are custom-made.

A look inside. The centre divider is removable so that if (when!) DVDs become obsolete, the interior can be reconfigured.

The case holds 64 standard-size DVDs, with a top shelf for larger box sets.
